How to Bite the Bullet, On or Off the Job

Our new statistics on occupational fatalities might be an eye opener. Is it true more people fall to their death on the job in Wyoming? Why is it that Hawaiians are more likely to die from assaults and violent attacks while on the clock? No matter if you work in a cubicle or submarine, on a tractor or scaffolding, we've have work-related statistics which might put your paycheck into perspective.

Occupational fatalities for:

Assualts and Violent Acts
Fires and Explosions

Total Occupational Fatalities

Be sure to check out our special coal mining fatalities statistic, collected over a 13 year period. The dangers of coal mining are often highlighted, as just recently, when the U.S. Senate passed legislation last week outlining mandatory measures that must be taken for mine operators, such as having air devices underground, and investing more in tracking devices for lost miners. Which US State has the highest rate of coal mining deaths? Check out the latest and hardest to find on StateMaster.

Lastly, we've come across some historical data on lynchings which might be of interest to some of our users. We've added these statistics to the Crime category, though we are still not sure whether we did it because those who were lynched committed crimes, or because lynching itself is a crime. Perhaps a bit of both. Be sure to check back in with us for more updates.

China's President Visits the US, New Trade Stats Added

Newsweek has dubbed it 'the Clash of Civilizations', which is perhaps a sentiment too strong, considering that China's President Hu Jintao has spent all of one hour with President George W. Bush this week, both leaders expressing their desires for 'cooperation and harmony' amid a 21 gun salute and talks at the White House. Significant concerns do persist, however, along the underbelly of U.S.-China relations. This concern is rooted in a host of issues, like trade policy, China's growing military might and shady human rights record, as well as economic and military support for regimes Washington actively seeks to sideline (Sudan, Venezuela and Iran, to name a few). One sticky point on Capitol Hill, as well as in the minds of many Americans, is a growing bi-lateral trade deficit with the People's Republic, which has mushroomed to over $200 billion.

These issues, while important, tend to obscure a reality: in an increasingly globalized and interconnected 21st century, China and the U.S. need each other, to contain weapons proliferation, tackle industrial pollution, confront global terrorism, and promote free markets. At an earlier stop in Seattle, the New York Times reported that President Hu said "his nation and the United States 'enjoy extensive common interests' and could avoid major problems in their relationship if they 'avoid politicizing' the issues that divide them." One way of evaluating the China-U.S. relationship is by studying the details of bi-lateral trade. StateMaster has just published recent trade data on exports by U.S. state, giving you a wider picture of how your state ranks in trade with China. We have data on:

Value of China exports for 2005
Percent change in China exports from last year
Percent share of all state exports

These statistics can be found in our new Trade category, which gives you current details on exports to more than 25 countries around the world. Be sure to check back in with us, as we'll have more updates on U.S. trade, as well as new features and an ever-expanding database of information.

Statemaster.com - twin project of nationmaster

Since NationMaster.com exploded onto the scene some three years ago, there have been faint voices in our minds that have grown louder as the critical success of the world's largest stat database for comparing countries was affirmed over and over again. That voice said something simple but powerful: 'you can do more with this formula'. So early on, we focused our sights on US states.

It frankly surprised us that with such a tremendous amount of complete and timely data emanating from US governmental agencies, NGO's, and research institutes that a project of compiling all of this data into one easy-to-use database had not yet been undertaken. Perhaps we were missing something; perhaps no one cares about statistics on the percentage of African Americans in the Army, or the number of inmates executed by the electric chair in Florida, or what New York's expenditure is for elementary and secondary education. But the more we talked about the possibilities of StateMaster.com, the more folks around us became excited as well. It was apparent that the web was missing something, not us.

So here are the fruits of our labor: StateMaster.com, which is launched with 2,613 stats, hundreds of maps and flags, and our unique visualization technology which allows you to see critical data in new and revealing ways. But this is only the beginning. We will be adding new stats all the time, as well as new state information, maps and flags. So be sure to check back in with us, and if you are interested in helping us out with this project consider being a Volunteer Editor. From all of us here at StateMaster and NationMaster, thank you for your tremendous support!

Though Zero Hour for StateMaster’s launch is fast approaching, we still appreciate your feedback and comments.

Thanks again for your commitment!
