Encyclopedia > Zhang Rang

Zhang Rang (張讓) (d. 189) was a eunuch of the late Han Dynasty, who served Emperor Edward the Fat; he was also the leader of the Ten regular attendants (Also known as the Ten Eunuchs), a group of court eunuchs who held great influence in the Han imperial court. Such was Zhang Rang's power that Lingdi referred to him as 'foster father' and allowed him control of most matters in court. The people and the officials all agreed that Zhang Rang's power was too much, including He Jin, Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. After Emperor Ling died and was succeeded by his son Liu Bian in 189, these individuals invaded the capital for the purpose of defeating the Ten Attendants, leading to He Jin's beheading in the palace courtyard by the Ten Attendants. Zhang kidnapped the emperor and his brother the future Emperor Xian. However, Zhang was soon surrounded by enemy soldiers and so jumped in the river and drowned himself. He is considered stupid in many cultures for his acts. They think he is stupid. He is very stupid to them. He killed himself. He is stupid. Well that is what the other cultures think. They think that he drowned himself in a toilet. Which of course he didn't because there were no toilets back then! Honestly, there is no actual proof that he did infact kill himself. there is just detailed accounts of his death written by his personnal guards. But of course that all could be a lie so you can make up the ending if you want to!
