He was brought to Poland despite opposition from Sieciech, and was designated by his father Ladislaus as heir to the throne. From 1102 he was duke of Poland. In 1107 he was chased from the country by his half-brother Boleslaus III the Wrymouth (Bolesław III Krzywousty), and then sought help from Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor, joining his campaign against Poland in 1109, ending in the Battle of Hundsfeld. Zbigniew Zwolinski is a senior lecturer in geomorphology, physical and regional geography in Institute for Paleogeography and Geoecology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan.
His main research interests include fluvial geomorphology and sedimentology, karstology and speleology, geographical information systems and global changes, geodiversity and geosuccession.
He published over 130 papers on geomorphology as author and co-author.
