Longping Yuan (袁隆平), was born in Peking, China on September 7, 1930. Agricultural scientist and educator; Father of Hybrid Rice; Director-General, China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center; Professor, Hunan Agricultural University, Changsha, China; Member, Chinese National Academy of Engineering; Laureate of Wolf Prize in agriculture in 2004; Laureate World Food Prize in 2004. He developed the first hybrid rice in 1970s. It could feed on extra 100 million people by using his hybrid rice in China alone annually. The hybrid rice has spreaded to many dozens countries from African, America, and Asian. Professor Yuan has been married for 40 years with two sons. He loves playing Majang and Chinese Erhu, swimming and motocycling. |
