"You Are Not Alone" was a hit single by singer/songwriter Michael Jackson, released in August 1995. It was the second single from his multi-platinum album HIStory. The song was written by R&B singer-songwriter R. Kelly and became the first single ever to debut at number one in the Billboard Hot 100. SABAM, Belgian right society, however, confirmed that the tune of the song was originally composed in 1993 by Eddy & Danny Van Passel, veteran Belgian songwriters, producers and music publishers. "You Are Not Alone" became the second most-successful Michael Jackson single released in the Nineties, after "Black or White". The song peaked at number one in many countries around the world, including the UK, the U.S., New Zealand, Ireland, France and Switzerland. In the UK it debuted at number three and then climbed to number one where is stayed for two weeks. The single remained in the top five for seven weeks and was in the top 75 for fifteen weeks. This long run in the charts resulted in a gold sales award. The huge success of "You Are Not Alone" pulled HIStory back into the top-ten.


In the USA, the single broke a record in Billboard's history by being the first ever single to debuting at number one in the Hot 100 singles chart. It also debuted at number one in the R&B chart. It remained at number one in the Hot 100 for just a week but remained at the top of the R&B chart for four weeks. Airplay was excellent with a number two peak position in the Hot 100 Airplay chart and number one for the R&B Airplay chart (where is stayed for seven weeks). Sales were strong with a peak position of number two in Hot 100 Sales, number one in R&B Sales and number three in Maxi single sales. It went platinum in the USA for sales of over one million copies. Success around the world was also substantial where it reached number one in New Zealand, Ireland, France and Switzerland. It reached number one on the Eurochart where it stayed for six weeks and remained in the top 100 for twenty-four weeks.
