Wilmer is a city located in Dallas County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,393.

Wilmer is located at 32°35'27" North, 96°40'57" West (32.590743, -96.682619)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.3 km˛ (6.3 mi˛). 16.3 km˛ (6.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,393 people, 958 households, and 714 families residing in the city. The population density is 207.9/km˛ (538.9/mi˛). There are 1,078 housing units at an average density of 66.1/km˛ (171.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 47.89% White, 23.43% African American, 1.12% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 24.55% from other races, and 2.95% from two or more races. 41.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 958 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.23 and the average family size is 3.71.


In the city the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 115.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,843, and the median income for a family is $35,820. Males have a median income of $26,742 versus $22,007 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,167. 18.8% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Wilmer is at the junction of Interstate Highway 45/U.S. Highway 75 and Cottonwood Creek, fourteen miles southeast of downtown Dallas in southeastern Dallas County.
By 1890 Wilmer was a thriving agricultural community raising cotton to be shipped on the Houston and Texas Central and had a population of 100, two churches, a steam mill and cotton gin, and two general stores.
Wilmer and the nearby community of Hutchins combined their two school districts and built a new school halfway between the communities.
