White County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 25,267. The county's county seat is Monticello, Indiana6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,318 km˛ (509 mi˛). 1,309 km˛ (505 mi˛) of it is land and 9 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.70% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,267 people, 9,727 households, and 7,090 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km˛ (50/mi˛). There are 12,083 housing units at an average density of 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.20% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.19% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 5.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 9,727 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $40,707, and the median income for a family is $46,436. Males have a median income of $33,232 versus $21,431 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,323. 7.00% of the population and 4.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.80% of those under the age of 18 and 8.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

White was united in marriage January 1838, to Miss Elizabeth Looney, who was born in Lewis County, Kentucky, March 30, 1818, and is the daughter of Peter and Jane (Salisbury) Looney.
He came to Indiana in 1821 and settled on land bought from the government, and was a member of the first jury impaneled in this county.
