Waitara is the name of a town and a river in the northern part of the Taranaki region of the North Island of New Zealand.
According to the 2001 census the usually-resident population of Waitara was 6250, a decrease of 4% since 1996.
The establishment of government in New Zealand occurred on 30 June 1852 with the Imperial Parliament at Westminster passing an Act granting representative institutions (partial self-government) to New Zealand.
