Audrey Hepburn is a blind woman terrorized by Alan Arkin who's a drug smuggler

Audrey Hepburn plays Susy, whose husband, Sam is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. She disappears. Mike and Carlino (Richard Crenna and Jack Weston) are small time hoods who find the woman's body in Susy's apartment, placed there by the woman's partner, Harry Roat (Alan Arkin). Susy's blindness is the key to their searching the apartment for the doll that contains smuggled drugs. Mike pretends to be an old friend of Susy's husband while her husband is away and together the crooks invent a story of a police investigation of her husband from which only the discovery of the now missing doll can save him. Roat is a killer, and his stalking of Susy becomes more and more obvious as the story unfolds, leaving us with the question, how does a blind woman defend herself? When the film was initially released, theaters dimmed their lights as low as they could, then turned off one light as each light in the apartment on-screen was shattered, until all of the lights in the theaters were completely turned off.

I was surprised to read that Frederick Knott (1916-2002), author of Wait Until Dark (1966), Dial "M" for Murder (1952), and not much else, was the most produced playwright of the 20th century after William Shakespeare.
She has the advantage in the dark, and since the apartment doubles as Sam’s dark room, it is possible to make it very dark indeed.
The “moment” to which everyone referred is dependent on Suzy being able to keep her attacker literally in the dark and it is his discovery of a source of light she had not considered that enables him to turn the tables on her.

And the dark brown turtleneck with light brown suede pants she wears for part of the film will never go out of style.
In all, Wait Until Dark won't fail to incite at least somewhat of an edge-of-seat reaction, though you might find some of the exaggerated characteristics of Alan Arkin's character on the funny rather than frightening side.
