History

The WWF Light Heavyweight Championship was first introduced in Mexico for the Universal Wrestling Association. It eventually migrated to Japan as well, although it wasn't considered as an official WWF title until after 1997, when a tournament was held in the United States to crown a champion. Before the tournament, the title was a part of the J-Crown. Incorporated as Lucha Libre Internacional, S.C. in January 1975 after Ray Mendoza split from the EMLL to form a new organization with Fancisco Flores and Benjamin Mora Jr. ... Title deactivation

In March 2001, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. purchased World Championship Wrestling. During the Invasion angle which followed, the WCW Cruiserweight Champion and the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion wrestled one another in a non-title match. The WWF Light Heavyweight Champion, X-Pac, defeated the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Billy Kidman. The titles remained separate. After the Invasion, the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship was deactivated in favour of the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, which was renamed as the WWF Cruiserweight Championship, and later the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.[1] World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. ... The WWF Light Heavyweight Championship is a retired professional wrestling championship, formerly competed for in the World Wrestling Federation by wrestlers billed as weighing less than 215 lb (98 kg).
The WWF first used the Light Heavyweight Championship in Japan and the Universal Wrestling Association, although the title was only recognized as an official WWF title after 1997, when a tournament was held on WWF television to crown a champion.
During the Invasion angle in 2001, X-Pac defeated Jeff Hardy for the Light Heavyweight Championship, and then defeated Billy Kidman for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship.

The WWF was not the only promotion to have broken ranks with the NWA; the American Wrestling Association (AWA) had long ago ceased being an official NWA member (although like the WWF, they seldom left their own territory).
The WWF hit a low point in the wake of allegations of steroid abuse and distribution made against McMahon and the WWF in 1994; there were also allegations of sexual harassment made by WWF employees.
The assets of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), which had folded after filing for bankruptcy protection in April 2001, were purchased by WWE in mid-2003.
