History

The WWF first began to used the Light Heavyweight Championship in Japaneese and Mexican promotions they had good connections with, though the title was only recognized as an official WWF/WWE title in 1997 when a tournament was held on American soil to crown a champion. To this day, WWE refuses to recognize any pre-1997 former champions as ever having held the belt. As such, Chris Benoit - who held the belt in 1991 under the name Pegasus Kid - is not recognised as a former WWF Light Heavyweight champion on the official WWE website. 1997 is a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. ... In 2001, during the Invasion angle, X-Pac held the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. He defeated Jeff Hardy for the Light Heavyweight Champion and then Billy Kidman for the WCW Cruiserweight Title. Contrary to many reports, this did not unify the belts and they had to be defended separately. After losing and regaining the Light Heavyweight Title in matches against Tajiri, X-Pac lost the Cruiserweight title to Billy Kidman. In November 2001 Waltman was injured and, without explanation, disappeared from WWF television. As Tajiri was the WCW Cruiserweight Champion at the time, he was temporarily kept off television until the conclusion of the Invasion angle, at which point the WWF began referring to him as the WWF Cruiserweight Champion. 2001 is a common year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar. ... X-Pac did not return to WWF television until the spring of 2002 when he joined the nWo, and given the lack of a Light Heavyweight Title belt around his waist, and the lack of an official unification match, it is assumed that the Light Heavyweight Title was simply abandoned.
