Marking articles for cleanup

This page is undergoing a transition to an easier-to-maintain format. Instead of listing pages here, please do the following:

  1. Make sure you shouldn't be using a different page instead. (See the section "Related pages" below.)
  2. Find the appropriate tag(s) in the table below.
  3. Add the appropriate tag(s) to the article.
  4. Add an explanatory note to the article's talk page. (In the old system you would have written that note on this page.)

By doing this, you will put the article into one or more categories where other Wikipedians can find and fix it.

Don't bother classifying your tags by date; this will be done by an automated process. Actually, leaving your tags unclassified by date will mark them as "new" for editors actively looking for the freshest articles to fix (which are often the easiest).

If you don't have time to do anything more than tag an article as needing cleanup, that's fine and a very useful thing to do. (Reading and evaluating articles does indeed take a lot of time and is certainly real work.) If you do have the time to do so, it would be helpful to fix one article already on the list for every one that you add. This helps ensure that at least some fixit work actually does get done, and helps keep the size of this collection from growing without bound.

Where to find articles that need cleaning up

All articles that have been identified as needing remedial cleanup are listed in one or more of the categories mentioned in the "Table of remedial cleanup tags" section below, or in one of the following old-style pages. Mark them for cleanup according to the process above. Please do not list new articles on these pages.

  • February 2005
  • January 2005
  • December 2004
  • November 2004
  • October 2004
  • September 2004
  • August 2004
  • Leftovers

Transition process for this page

All of the articles on the by-month cleanup pages mentioned above need to be de-listed by:

  1. Identifying the appropriate tag(s) in the table below
  2. Tagging the article
  3. Moving any explanatory text to the article's talk page

It might be easier just to actually clean up a given article than to re-tag it as needing attention, especially for articles that just need to be moved.

Table of remedial cleanup tags

See Wikipedia:Template_messages/All for a complete listing of useful tags. Some tags have alternate versions which are used if the applicability of the tag is disputed. That page also gives more specific instructions about where to put tags, if the top of the talk page is not the best place.

Tag Text that will be shown (and usage notes) Category to find articles so tagged
  • Use if there is a problem not addressed by any of the below tags.
  • It's OK to use in combination with any of the below tags, but please avoid excessive "box stacking".

If you make this temporary page, please make a note of it on the talk page for this article (available by clicking the "discussion" link).

Unless a stub is written on a temporary subpage, deletion will occur after one week from the time this page title was placed on the Wikipedia:Copyright problems page.

Collaboration coordination

Some editors prefer that helpers work on leftovers and older articles, just to deal with them and get them out of the way. See the cleanup calendar for requests from previous months. But either preference, new or old; all help is appreciated. If you have a cleanup routine, add your name and your routine preferences (how often, old/new articles, what subjects, etc ) to the cleanup routine list.
