WLXC originally signed on the air in 1994 with a Sports radio format known as "The Ticket". After a period of a year that saw little audience growth, the station changed format in late 1995 to a syndicated Beach music format known as "The Breeze". Although it had a small but loyal following, the station failed to gain traction in the ratings. In 1998, the station was sold to Citadel Broadcasting, which changed it to its current Urban AC format.
