WCAY 620 signed on sometime in the mid-1960s as Columbia's first 24 hour Country radio station (WQXL was Country as well from 1968 to 1972, but was daytime-only). The station gained a reputation for its right-wing politics and some would say racist attitude. The morning host threw in lots of conservative commentary and views on school desegregation. By the late 70s, the station faced stiff competition as WCOS-FM became the dominate Country station in the market as well as serious financial problems due to station mismanagement.
