Virtual XI is the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden's 11th studio album, released March 23, 1998. It was the second and final Iron Maiden album recorded with vocalist Blaze Bayley. The album stands out as having a more traditional rock-sound to it and by not being as heavy as some of Maiden's other albums - partly due to the large amount of keyboard use. This is possibly because this album was the first one where Steve Harris performed several of the keyboard-parts recorded on the album himself (in the previous three albums it had been entirely done by Michael Kenney, and before that keyboard use had been minimal). It also featured very little songwriting by Janick Gers compared to other Iron Maiden albums since he joined the band in 1990. Just like the tour of The X Factor album, the tour for this album was cut short when Bayley suffered from an allergic reaction caused by certain elements used on the stage. This, combined with "The Angel and the Gambler" being among the less popular songs on the album (and the only pre-release single) can partly explain why this album is the lowest charting Iron Maiden album, beating 1981's Killers which charted at 12th place. This album is also considered to be Iron Maiden's worst effort yet, both critically and commercially, failing to sell at least 1 million copies. Many fans also felt that tracks like "The Angel and the Gambler" and "Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger" were lyrically and musically weak, as well as being overlong. For example, the chorus for "The Angel and the Gambler" is repeated over 20 times. The X Factor is a heavy metal album released October 2, 1995 by Iron Maiden. ... "The Angel and the Gambler" and "Futureal" were released as singles. "Futureal" is commonly regarded as an Iron Maiden classic despite the album's overall unpopularity, and "The Clansman" also became popular live track.

Sonos Metallicos - Arvostelu: Iron Maiden - Virtual XI (530 words)
Virtual XI on nimittäin varsin mielenkiintoisella tavalla ehkäpä kokeilevin Iron Maiden -albumi, mutta valitettavasti nämä kokeilut eivät oikein ota onnistuakseen, jolloin kulmikkaat ratkaisut kääntyvät hyvin nopeasti itseään vastaan.
Virtual XI on albumi, jolla Iron Maiden pyrkii tapansa mukaisesti uudistumaan sopivalla tavalla, mutta tällä kertaa uudistuminen johtaa pääosin vain kehnompiin sävellyksiin ja perusasioiden unohtamiseen, jolloin monet Iron Maidenille ominaiset perusasiatkin valuvat mielikuvituksettomuuteen.
Muutamat kappaleet Virtual XI:lla ovat varsin toimivia, mikä on tullut huomattua varsinkin keikkaolosuhteissa, mutta loppujen lopuksi albumi liikkuu hyvin pitkälti melkoisen huonon ja karmaisevan rajamailla.
