History

Vinje was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The municipality of Rauland was separated from Vinje 1860, but was again incorporated back with Vinje on January 1, 1964. Rauland has since been part of the larger Vinje municipality. Vinje is situated on both the Hardangervidda and parts of the Setesdalsheiane Mountains plateaus. The Vinje series consists of deep, well drained and moderately well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in silty or clayey glacial lacustrine sediments overlying glacial till on uplands.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Vinje soils are on convex knobs and side slopes on glacial moraines or lake plains.
Kamrar soils are on similar or slightly lower lying areas on the landscape.
