The Verizon Heritage is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in April in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Since 1969 the tournament has been held on the Harbour Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Resort. Verizon took over as the main sponsor of the event in 2006. Before 2006 it was known as the MCI Classic. The format of the tournament is stroke play at 18 holes for four days, a total of 72 holes. The field consists of 156 players. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the top seventy players plus all players tied for 70th place. The 2006 purse was $5,300,000, with $954,000 going to the winner (the usual PGA Tour winner's share of 18%). The tournament was founded in 1969 as the Heritage Golf Classic. The Heritage Classic Foundation

The Heritage Classic Foundation, general sponsor of the Verizon Heritage, provides the financial stability, guidance and direction to the tournament. After each tournament, the Foundation distributes revenue produced by the event to a wide variety of charitable organizations, universities and medical institutions. In 2005, the Heritage Classic Foundation was honored to donate $1.55 million dollars, bringing the total to close to $13 million since it was organized.
