Van Etten is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,518.

The Town of Van Etten was formed in 1854 from the Town of Cayuta, which became part of Schuyler County, New York. Within the town there is a village also called Van Etten.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 107.7 km˛ (41.6 mi˛). 107.6 km˛ (41.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.02% is water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,518 people, 596 households, and 420 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.1/km˛ (36.5/mi˛). There are 679 housing units at an average density of 6.3/km˛ (16.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.55% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 596 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,011, and the median income for a family is $38,462. Males have a median income of $26,318 versus $24,762 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,426. 12.5% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
