According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.0 km˛ (12.8 mi˛). 30.9 km˛ (11.9 mi˛) of it is land and 2.1 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.35% water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,408 people, 1,928 households, and 1,284 families residing in the city. The population density is 207.2/km˛ (536.8/mi˛). There are 2,023 housing units at an average density of 65.4/km˛ (169.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 80.77% White, 9.91% African American, 0.64% Native American, 2.67% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 3.00% from other races, and 2.90% from two or more races. 9.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,928 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.87.
