The website was created by Jake "virt" Kaufman and a team of volunteer web designers in 2002, as an alternative to OverClocked ReMix. The two sites are similar in concept but have different approaches to quality control. Any artist was allowed to submit their works to either website, but rather than using judges to accept or reject submissions, as OverClocked ReMix does, VGMix's quality was maintained through reviews and score ratings supplied by users of the site.
