The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (also known as “Southwestern”) is one of the leading medical research facilities in the United States. Originally named as “Southwestern Medical College”, it was established in 1943 as a wartime medical school and is part of the University of Texas System. Four Nobel laureates are tenured at Southwestern  (http://www8.utsouthwestern.edu/utsw/home/about/nobel/index.html).

The only two medical schools in the state were the University of TexasMedical Branch at Galveston, the sole state school, and the private Baylor Medical College, which recently had moved to Houston from Dallas.
Texas's first medical scientist in the Academy was elected in 1979 and it is interesting that since that time, one-half of all the Texans elected have been from medical institutions-a pattern quite different from the country-at-large.
