The university was founded in 1909. It is a relatively small institution, both in terms of enrollment and campus size, compared to the other major members of the University of Maine System.

The universtiy has many features, among them, two newly renovated residence halls, Dorward Hall and Sennett Hall. The rural and costal settings of the campus allows students who attend The University of Maine at Machais to have a unique learning experience unlike any other school in the University of Maine System. There are also various organizations on campus including greek organizations. The recognized greek fraternities on campus are Kappa Delta Phi, Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Mu Alpha, Sigma Chi Lambda. The sororities located on campus are Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Kappa Alpha Kappa, Phi Tau Phi, Kappa Delta Phi nas. There are also various clubs such as the outing and science club. All of this combined gives students a unique and wonderful experience while attending The University of Maine at Machias.
