The University of Maine System (UMS) is a network of public universities in Maine. Created in 1968 by the Maine State Legislature, the University of Maine System consists of seven universities, each with a distinct mission and regional character. Approximately 34,700 students are enrolled at these institutions.
Maine is the northernmost state in the New England region, bordered on the west by New Hampshire.
Maine is the easternmost state in the contiguous 48 states (the easternmost city is Eastport, Maine), although some Aleutian Islands in Alaska are in the eastern hemisphere and so it can be claimed that Alaska is the easternmost U.S. state.
Maine is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River, owing in part to its huge relative sizeâits land mass exceeds that of all other New England states combined.
The University of Maine, established in 1865, is the flagship university of the University of MaineSystem.
The University's Fogler Library is the largest in Maine and serves as one of its intellectual hubs, attracting scholars, professors, and researchers from around the state.
The University of Maine participates in the NCAA's Division I level, and it is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference for football, Hockey East for ice hockey, and the America East Conference for all other sports.
