Tyrant Flycatchers

Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Tyrannidae
Genera

Many, see text.

The tyrant flycatchers are a large family of passerine birds which occur throughout North and South America, but are mainly tropical in distribution. They superficially resemble the Old World flycatchers, but are more robust with stronger bills. They are members of suborder Tyranni (suboscines) and so do not have the sophisticated vocal capabilities of the songbirds.

Most, but not all, are rather plain, and many have erectile crests. As the name implies, most are insectivorous, but some will take fruit.

There are about 429 species.

Flycatcher, Tyrant (308 words)
The tyrant flycatcher (family Tyrannidae) comprises a large, diverse New World family of birds.
Of the 539 known species of Tyrannidae, 18 regularly breed in Canada (12 called flycatchers, 2 kingbirds, 2 pewees, 2 phoebes); 12 others stray here.
The great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus) of eastern broad-leaved woodlands and olive-sided flycatcher (Contopus borealis) of coniferous forests across Canada are large compared with species of the genus Empidonax.
Auk, The: Phylogeny of the tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) based on morphology and behavior (1236 words)
A Tyrannidae exclusive of the Cotingidae and Pipridae is monophyletic in some most-parsimonious trees, but not in others in which flatbills and tody-tyrants are basal to a clade containing Cotingidae, Pipridae, and the remaining tyrannid genera.
THE TYRANT FLYCATCHERS (Tyrannidae) are a large, primarily Neotropical family of suboscine passerine birds in the superfamily Tyrannoidea which also include the cotingas (Cotingidae) and manakins (Pipridae).
The relationships among the 90 to 100 genera of tyrant flycatchers were historically based on the shape of the bill, wing and tail, and color and pattern of plumage.
