Turkishdelight (lokum) and baklava will be served by courtesy of the Turkish Embassy before the screening.
These three films resonate strangely with one another: together they offer a contemplation of childhood and adulthood, country and city, and present and past, together with a self-portrait of the director and an enquiry into the use and futility of cinema.
Ceylans extremely personal film, like stylised poetry, was beautifully shot (in fl and white) in an Anatolian village where he spent his childhood and stands as one of the great childs-eye films.
TurkishDelight, or lokum, is a confection made from starch and sugar.
Turkish legend has it that in his endeavor to cope with all his mistresses, a Turkish sultan summoned all his confectionery experts and ordered them to produce a unique dessert to add to the collection of secret recipes for which he was famous.
During his travels to Istanbul, an unknown British traveler became very fond of the Turkish delicacy, purchased cases of lokum and shipped them to Britain under the name TurkishDelight.
