This status continued through the first years of the Republic of Turkey, until 1936 when the name of the province ("Dersim") has been changed to Tunceli -literally 'the land of bronze' in Turkish, (tunç meaning bronze and el (in this context) meaning land). In 1979/1980 Tunceli had the highest number of students attending universities as well as the top entry points until the only higher education school shut down and converted to a military base.

Tunceli used to be part of a province named Dersim. This province was destroyed by the Turks during the Ataturk period, who tried to wipe out & brainwash all the inhabitants. The Turks killed hundreds of thousands of Kurds and tortured them, made them give up their language and culture and have to fit in with the modern Turkish movement. Dersim also included a small area in Erzincan called Tercan. Dersim's people are a minor group of Kurds who speak a different Kurdish to all the other Kurds that inhabit in Turkey - this is called Zazaki. It had been illegal to speak Kurdish until 2003 in Turkey, if you did so you were put in prison. Also it is still illegal to utter the word "Kurdistan" when on Turkish land. Until this day, Turks still supress Kurds & Kurdish culture, and Kurds have a hard time living in Turkey because they are treated badly.

Tunceli, Turkey (588 words)
In one of the most underdeveloped but also one of the most attractive regions of eastern Turkey lies the provincial town of Tunceli, a settlement on the southern edge of an impressive mountainous region.
Hemmed in by the paths of the Peri Suyu in the east, the Firat Nehri to the west and the north and the Murat Nehri in the south, all sources of the Euphrates, the triangular region thus created which forms the "wild" Tunceli highlands is characterized by two very different types of mountains.
Tunceli became the provincial capital in 1950 and like the earlier village of Mamiki, it has little of interest to offer visitors.
