Topsham is a town located in Sagadahoc County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,100.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.8 km˛ (35.4 mi˛). 82.9 km˛ (32.0 mi˛) of it is land and 8.8 km˛ (3.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 9.62% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,100 people, 3,424 households, and 2,461 families residing in the town. The population density is 109.7/km˛ (284.2/mi˛). There are 3,573 housing units at an average density of 43.1/km˛ (111.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 95.19% White, 1.33% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,424 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,682, and the median income for a family is $52,134. Males have a median income of $35,943 versus $25,581 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,135. 4.1% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Public schools in the area are operated by Maine School Administrative District 75

Topsham, in Sagadahoc County, is situated in a broad bend of the Androscoggin river extending, in general course, from Lisbon south-east to Brunswick, and from thence north-eastward to Merrymeeting Bay.
In the higher portions the soil is a brown loam, on the plains a sandy loam, and in the lowlands, clay and clay loam.
Topsham is connected with Brunswick on the south side of the river by three bridges, two of which are railroad bridges.

TOPSHAM — Municipal and school officials painted a bleak picture Thursday night of what the town will look like if a property-tax cap is approved by Maine voters on Nov. 2.
Palesky, who is president of the Maine Taxpayer Action Network and a grandmother of four, accused town officials of using scare tactics to incite opposition to the measure, which would cap property taxes rates at 1 percent of assessed value.
Town Manager Gary Brown stopped short of predicting which employees would have to be laid off and which services would be cut.
