Encyclopedia > Tomotherapy

TomoTherapy is a radiation therapy delivery system. It was developed by Thomas "Rock" Mackie at the University of Wisconsin. The system is a marriage of a CT scanner and linear accelerator, enabling a CT scan to varify the position of the tumor immedialty before treatment. The first clinical use of TomoTherapy was in 2003, there are now more then 100 sites across the United States. Lung cancer, head and neck tumors and prostate cancers are some examples of malignancies successfuly treated with TomoTherapy.
