History

Neville Roy Singham founded Singham Business Services in 1990 as a management consulting company servicing the equipment leasing industry. After three years of helping businesses use software, he changed the company's name to ThoughtWorks and the focus became building software. As technologies changed, ThoughtWorks sought to use new technologies to build so called enterprise-level applications. Some of its earliest work was in Forte 4GL,[citation needed] which was replaced by Java in the late nineties. ThoughtWorks began working with .Net in 2001, Python in 2004, and Ruby in 2005, ensuring it remains abreast of the current fads and fashions in the IT landscape. Technology decisions have been consistently driven by developers rather than management, and as a result have had a turbulent relationship with some clients that are more business goals oriented. Culture

ThoughtWorks' culture is built around a belief that relationships between people are very important, indeed probably the single most important factor in the development of an organization. This is an extension of the core values of Extreme Programming, the software engineering methodology practised by ThoughtWorks. It is this which drives initiatives like ThoughtWorks University and the Employee Exchange Program. ThoughtWorks also encourages innovation from all of its employees (referred to as 'ThoughtWorkers' within the organization). ThoughtWorkers are active in the Open-source software community and are frequent speakers and presenters at global technical conferences. They enjoy a reputation of being loud and opinionated, which has earned the company a mildly negative reputation sometimes.
