Attended Vanderbilt University - the same year as fellow alumni William S. Hatcher. He went on to obtain a B.A. from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1962, and did graduate work a few universities before finishing his PhD at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976. He went on to produce a widely cited liberal review of history and the Bible called The Bible in History: How Writers Create a Past published in 1999[2] but has published over a dozen articles and six books on the history of ancient Palestine and Israelies. He has held professorship positions at École Biblique, Lawrence University, Marquette University and is presently at the University of Copenhagen since 1993.
