The Wailers (Tacoma, Washington) ; were an American rock band, often considered the first garage rock group. Five 45s (4 released in 1959 & one in 1960 & a LP release; "The Fabulous Wailers" Dec. 1959. on Golden Crest Records (Huntington Station, L. I. New York): Put The Wailers on the "National" recording scene. The Golden Crest 45s & 78s released in Canada, England, France, South Africa, New Zealand & Australia in 1959 put this band of teenagers on the International scene. Their 1961 regional cover of "Louie Louie" inspired other groups from the Seattle-area, most influentially The Kingsmen of Portland, Oregon, to record the same song, and the band's influence established Seattle (as well as cities like Tacoma and Olympia) as a center for musical innovation and the home of a long string of regional favorites playing a kind of raunchy, amateur, yet passionate, form of rock and roll. In 1963, the year that Marley helped start The Wailers, Sims visited the country for the first time as promoter of a concert tour; in four years, he would be working with the group of hopefuls from Trench Town.
As legend has it, The Wailers were in London to promote Reggae On Broadway when Marley, disillusioned with the slow progress of his deal with JAD, approached Blackwell to produce and market the group, which by now was a full-fledged Reggae band.
Wailers and is largely credited with their international breakthrough in the mid 1970s.
