The card was originally to be highlighted by a Steel cage match between Ric Flair and Lex Luger for the WCW World Championship, and this match was heavily promoted on WCW TV. However, just a few days before the show, WCW Executive Vice President Jim Herd fired Flair over a contract dispute, stripping him of the title in the process. Since Flair owned the physical "Big Gold Belt", he took it with him to the World Wrestling Federation, so WCW had to make a temporary WCW World Heavyweight Championship belt just for the event. Young stars such as Sid Vicious, Sting, Scott Steiner, The Road Warriors, Brian Pillman, The Great Muta and Lex Luger were given big storylines and championship opportunities.
There were signs of gradual recovery in late 1993 when former commentator and American Wrestling Association (AWA) booker Eric Bischoff was appointed as Executive Vice President of WCW.
Bischoff, originally brought in as a secondary commentator behind Jim Ross after the AWA became defunct, was desperate to give WCW a new direction and impressed Turner's top brass with his confrontational tactics and business-savvy.

The win was a great upset, for Wanz had held the title since 1978.
