The Telemark canal originally consisted of two canals. The Norsjø-Skien canal, with locks in Skien and by Løveid was built in the period 1854–1861, and is the oldest of the two canals. The other original canal – Bandak-Nordsjø canal – was opened in 1892. In Europe the canal was seen as "the eighth wonder" when it was finished. The canal was mainly built for transport of goods and passengers, log floating and to prevent flooding. The TelemarkCanal stretches 105 kilometres from Skien to Dalen.
The idea of canalizing the Telemark watercourse was introduced as early as 1805, when political economist Christen Pram entertained the notion that to be able to sail up the waterfalls Klostefossen and Skotfossen would be a most welcome convenience.
At the intersection south of the canal there is housing for the lockkeeper, foreman and lock-gate man; on the north side of the canal there is an old smithy.
