Taphephobia (from Greek taphos, meaning "grave") is an extreme or irrational fear of the grave, or fear of being placed in a grave while still alive, a case of specific phobia. The term phobia, which comes from the Ancient Greek word for fear (φόβος, fobos), denotes a number of psychological and physiological conditions that can range from serious disabilities to common fears to minor quirks. ...


Like many psychological phobias, taphephobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism, often from a specific past event in ones life. Often sufferers already have an at least partially acknowledged existing sensitivity towards the subject of their own death.


The phobia manifests itself in different ways. Some experience it quite frequently while others just in response to direct stimuli.
