Sylvania is a city located in Screven County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,675. The city is the county seat of Screven County6.


Sylvania is located at 32°45'1" North, 81°38'23" West (32.750151, -81.639590)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.8 km˛ (3.8 mi˛). 9.8 km˛ (3.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,675 people, 1,088 households, and 683 families residing in the city. The population density is 272.5/km˛ (705.5/mi˛). There are 1,285 housing units at an average density of 130.9/km˛ (338.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 57.42% White, 41.57% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.22% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,088 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% are married couples living together, 19.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 78.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,426, and the median income for a family is $38,355. Males have a median income of $40,590 versus $20,349 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,181. 18.7% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.3% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Sylvania, the seat of Screven County, is located in east central Georgia, about fifty-four miles southeast of Augusta and fifty-eight miles northwest of Savannah.
The county seat was moved to Sylvania from its former location at Jacksonborough by the state legislature in 1847.
Sylvania calls itself the "Azalea and Dogwood City" and the "Welcome Station City." Popular events held there include the Annual Livestock Festival in April and the Annual Air Exposition held in the fall.
