The town of Sydney Mines was founded in 1784 and incorporated in 1889. It has a rich history in coal production, but that industry has died out in recent decades.

Sydney Mines' best known athlete is Johnny Miles - a grocery store clerk - who won the Boston Marathon in 1926 and 1929, and who won a bronze metal in the marathon for Canada at the Commonwealth Games of 1930.
