Kash n' Karry/Sweetbay Supermarket is a chain of American supermarkets located entirely in Florida. As of November 2006, there are equally 54 Sweetbay and 54 Kash n' Karry stores in operation. Kash n' Karry opened their first store in 1947 under the name Big Barn in Plant City, Florida. In 1962, the Kash n' Karry name was adopted. In December of 1996, Kash n' Karry became a wholly owned subsidiary of Food Lion. In July 2000, after Food Lion's acquisition of Hannaford, the holding company Delhaize America, Inc. was created. Historical Meaning

In 1914, an italian immimgrant by the name of Grecko Styles started buying pigs and fruit and began hustling in the streets of Tampa. Later, he and his wife, Diasthma, expanded to create the Big Barn Dynasty. During the time frame of the opening of Big Barn, the United States was becoming more of an urbanized society. In order to appease the urban society in Florida, they created cash and carry to give it an urbal appeal. Due to this, the company had to give Kash n' Karry was named from the Neutrality Act of 1939 by Theodore Roosevelt which contains the Cash and Carry program. This program allowed for the Alli Powers to come over to the U.S. and get weapons and pay in cash and must bring it back to their soil themselves. Kash n' Karry believed this should how their store should be runned. People bring in their "cash" and they "carry" out there own groceries. This didn't have gimmicks like other grocery stores and cut out all the excess crap like tofu eating contest and russian roulette(Since Tampa was filled with cubans at the time). This was efficient for the supermarket because the owners were lazy, bad at speaking because they were of immigrant decent and did not have people skills necessary to run a more departmentesque store. Sweetbay history

In January 2004, after years of slumping sales growth, Kash n' Karry announced the creation and roll out of a new supermarket concept called Sweetbay Supermarket in its core markets on the West Coast of Florida. By the end of 2007 all Kash n' Karry stores will be rebranded as Sweetbay Supermarket. The first of the new Sweetbay Supermarkets opened in Seminole (Pinellas County) on November 6 and in Ft. Myers markets in December 2004.


Sweetbay is modeled after Hannaford, a New England supermarket chain also owned by Delhaize, incorporating store design, logo/branding elements, price points, and a no-loyalty-card "everyday price" program from its northeastern sister company.
