In 2005, the NFL temporarily awarded the city of Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium the Super Bowl for a date between 2012 through 2021 with the earliest possible game being Super Bowl XLVI, leaving the slim possibility that Kansas City could be a candidate. The league intends to hold the Super Bowl in Kansas City as a tribute to Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, the man who gave the annual championship game its name back in 1967. However, this is contingent on a proposed plan to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, including the building of a climate-controlling "Rolling Roof" structure that would cover the entire stadium.
