Sunland Park is a city located in Doņa Ana County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,309.

Sunland Park is located at 31°48'24" North, 106°34'48" West (31.806719, -106.579985)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.0 km˛ (10.8 mi˛). 27.4 km˛ (10.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.31% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,309 people, 3,355 households, and 2,969 families residing in the city. The population density is 486.6/km˛ (1,260.6/mi˛). There are 3,617 housing units at an average density of 132.2/km˛ (342.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 69.80% White, 0.53% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 26.02% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. 96.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,355 households out of which 55.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% are married couples living together, 20.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 11.5% are non-families. 9.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.95 and the average family size is 4.24.


In the city the population is spread out with 37.5% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $20,164, and the median income for a family is $21,255. Males have a median income of $17,838 versus $15,129 for females. The per capita income for the city is $6,576. 39.0% of the population and 36.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.2% of those under the age of 18 and 34.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
