Stephen is related to the former Sheffield United F.C. manager Neil Warnock, though he does indeed have a brother named Neil. He is a product of the Liverpool youth academy, and had loan spells at Bradford City and Coventry City, before making his Liverpool debut against Grazer AK in 2004, in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
