Maguire was the surprise winner of the 2004 European Open. Ranked 41 in the world at the time, he beat Jimmy White 9-3 in the final. He then went to win the UK Championship on 28 November 2004 with a 10-1 victory over David Gray, after having knocked out world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan earlier in the tournament. He has played O'Sullivan 5 times so far in his career, losing to him in two World Championship first-round matches. The second half of his 2004-2005 season was disappointing, but he still moved up to #3 in the World Rankings. In the 2005/2006 season he only reached one quarter-final, showing evidence of a loss in form, especially when losing 13-4 to qualifier Marco Fu in the World Championship, blaming his shortcomings on a lack of fitness, stating "I don't want to be a fat world champion". Ananova - Maguire edges Lee in dire scrap (525 words)
Maguire agreed that he will have to bring about a wholesale improvement if he is to beat either Tony Drago or Jimmy White and take the trophy back to Scotland.
Maguire committed numerous errors but Lee was truly awful as he lost a ludicrously low scoring seventh on the green and an equally embarrassing eighth on the brown to trail 5-3.
Maguire froze in the eighth - missing two fls off the spot with the opportunity to wrap it up - but a frame later he retained sufficient composure to compile a 69 break for victory.
