Background

During the 1970s, Lloyd Webber planned to produce a musical movie adaptation of Rev W. Awdry's Railway Series books. This fell through, as Awdry felt that Lloyd Webber wanted a greater degree of creative control than he was prepared to give. A legacy of this early scheme is the Really Useful Company, named in reference to a catchphrase used in several of the books. The Reverend W. V. Awdry OBE (15 June 1911 – 21 March 1997) was a clergyman, railway enthusiast and childrens author, best known as the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine. ... Lloyd Webber was interested in developing the idea of a musical about trains further, and conceived what he described as "a Cinderella story" in which Rusty stands for Cinderella, and Greaseball and Electra, the stepsisters. The Starlight Express itself fills the role of the fairy godmother. Plot

Although the material has been altered heavily since the original production, the basic plot has remained the same: a child dreams that his toy locomotives and rolling stock come to life and are preparing for a race, with engines from all over the world competing. Each engine has to pull a coach or truck in order to enter. Representing the USA is Greaseball, an arrogant diesel locomotive who bears a strong resemblance to Elvis Presley, whose girlfriend is Dinah the dining car. He is accompanied by the Greaseball Gang, also diesel locomotives. In the freight yard lives Rusty, a young steam engine who dreams of winning the race but who is seen as slow and old-fashioned by everyone else. He is in love with Pearl the brand new observation car, and when he asks her to race, she accepts, with the proviso she might change her mind. She later turns him down when a late entry to the race, Electra, a state-of-the-art electric locomotive, asks Pearl to race with him. She choses style over love. Poppa, an old steam engine and past racing champion, tells Rusty the legend of the Starlight Express, a midnight train who helps engines in distress. The Starlight visits Rusty in a dream, telling him that true power comes from within. In the end, the underdog, Rusty, triumphs over the more powerful engines, winning the final race, Pearl's love and his self-confidence. A modern Diesel locomotive. ... “Elvis” redirects here. ...
