Encyclopedia > StarCraft units and structures

StarCraft is a real-time strategy game that makes use of three races pitted against each other: the Terrans, the Protoss and the Zerg. StarCraft (SC) is a real-time strategy computer game by Blizzard Entertainment. ...

Unlike Blizzard Entertainment’s first two forays into RTS with WarCraft, StarCraft went against the typical symmetrical match ups. Instead, each race is given its own unique properties, their own advantages and disadvantages. As such, each unit does not quite match up easily with another race’s. For example, it used to be that a Footman and a Grunt each have equal hit points, in StarCraft, a Protoss Zealot has higher hit points than a Zergling but the Zergling can attack faster to balance this out. Also, spells, abilities and functions are not completely parallel. For example, a Terran Science Vessel, a Zerg Overlord and a Protoss Observer have little in common in terms of offensive power and function but they can spot invisible units. Units

The boxes below only represent the closest approximation each race’s unit has with another. Some units do not stack quite so closely and some appear to not have a counterpart at all, thus the rankings are sometimes debatable.

StarCraft also continues from WarCraft II the idea of hero units. Heroes are basically more powerful versions of existing units from each side. They usually have higher hit points and armor and are able to deal more damage. For hero versions of spellcaster units, they have a higher spellcasting energy. Game animation between the normal units and hero versions remain the same but the head animation may differ with some hero characters. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (usually simply called Warcraft II; sometimes abbreviated to WCII, WC2 or War2) is a sequel to the popular real-time strategy game Warcraft, developed by Blizzard Entertainment in December 1995. ...

Buildings

As with the units, even the buildings have been shuffled in terms of which structure approximates with another race’s. The Zerg’s differs from the Terrans and Protoss as their Drones become the buildings. Also, all their units are produced from the larva at the Hatchery and the number of units they can produce are not based on Creep Colonies but on the number of Overlords.
