Stanley Cup Champions by Franchise

The following is a list of Stanley Cup champions since 1915, the year the cup was first awarded on an annual basis. Prior to 1915 it was a "challenge" cup: teams could challenge the champion throughout the year, so there was no clear annual winner.

Note: Arenas and St. Patricks are former names of the Toronto Maple Leafs; they are listed only under "Maple Leafs." Further, the Ottawa Senators team cited is the original franchise that folded in 1935; the current Senators have won no Cups.

Montreal Canadiens 24
Toronto Maple Leafs 13
Detroit Red Wings 10
Boston Bruins 5
Edmonton Oilers 5

Trivia

  • The last 16 consecutive teams that have lost the Stanley Cup final have represented different cities. (the Minnesota North Stars lost in 1991, and Dallas Stars in 1999 - same franchise, but different locations)
  • When the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars played for the cup in 1991, it was the first time two teams that had never won it before played each other since 1934, when Chicago won its first cup over Detroit.
  • The 1996 final between the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers is the only time since the cup was awarded annually in which neither team had previously competed for it.

The Stanley Cup is one of the oldest trophies in professional sports.
Each year, the winner of the Finals was given the right to engrave their team name on the base ring of the cup trophy.
By 1902, the base ring of the cup was full and teams would either have to buy another ring, or start engraving on other parts of the cup, which is exactly what happened.

Until 1910, when Cup trustees declared that only players who played in their league's regular season were eligible to play for the Cup, it was commonplace for both champion and challenger in the challenge series to bring in professional ringers to play the challenge games.
The first year the Stanley Cup was not contested was 1918, when the influenza epidemic that ravaged the world that year forcing the cancellation of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Seattle Metropolitans, with Montreal's "Bad" Joe Hall dying from the flu.
The bands were finally filled up in 1991 when a decision was made to preserve the top band of the large barrel in the Hockey Hall of Fame and introduce a new blank band at the bottom so that the size of the Stanley Cup would not grow further.
