Structure

The Union is organized around collegial governance. Each March a President and Vice President run in a slate, and are elected by the student body. The elected officials then choose an executive team which serves as their cabinet for the following year. The new executive team works to structure the following year's budget and determine the organization's direction.

The hired "VP's" are then ratified by the student council (whom are the elected officials of the Union).

The Executives work at the University during the summer to plan for the following year. In September when the students return council becomes active and the Executives and council meet to discuss the general goings on of the Union and report/pass various things.

History

The StFX students Union is over 60 years old. It has gone through many incarnations since 1965. Some years the organization focuses on student experience, other years the focus is on political activism.

In recent years the Union has tried to strike an equal balance between student lobbying and student experience. With the 188% rise in tuition in Nova Scotia in the past 16 years, X has felt the effects greatly.

StFX became a member of CASA a national lobbying group for PSE in Canada, and was also a founding member of ANSSA, a provincial lobbying group for PSE in Nova Scotia. X has a strong voice in both of these organizations and places considerable effort into the promotion of Accessibility and Affordability for all post secondary institutions in Canada CASA is an acronym for: Canadian Alliance of Student Associations Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA CASA, an antigen which acts as a tumor marker of the ovary Civil Aviation Safety Authority Court Appointed Special Advocate Casa is slang for: House or dwelling (from Spanish casa) This is a disambiguation page — a navigational... In 2006 Harrison Stevens and Adam Hinton were elected as Students Union President and Vice President. Upon election and formation of their executive cabinet they began a process of improving the way the Union communicates with its students. This process was termed as "building new walls, instead of painting over old ones".

The new communications driven Union placed tens of thousands of dollars on communications initiatives to improve signage, branding, technologies etc. The goal of all- to connect with students as never before.
