The later episode, "Possession", dealt with the idea of sparks, but the spark in question -- that of Starscream -- is established as being aberrant, and thus the properties it displays are not neccessarily characteristic of sparks in general.
The character bio for Magmatron mentions this ability of his, and categorizes his spark as a "mitotic spark" which is able to split, sharing itself between his three beast modes.
