History

The airline was established in December 1986 and began operations in March 1988. It was set up as a joint venture between SAS and Viajes Marsans, and began operations with European charters. Long-haul flights to the USA, Mexico and the Dominican Republic were launched in 1991, followed by domestic scheduled flights in March 1994. The airline flew long-haul flights by using Boeing 767-300 aircraft to Washington and Buenos Aires briefly in the late-1990s. Spanair joined Star Alliance in 2003. The company is owned by the SAS Group (94.9%) and Grupo Marsans (5.1%). Spanair really have taken the initiative when it comes to domestic flights, they are showing up Iberia (who have lost the plot), and with cheaper ticket prices, better service and courteous staff, Spanair is the airline to fly when possible!
Spanair is a very OK airline but they certainly need to improve their on ground service.
I flew Spanair on a short domestic flight and the service I received in the air was much better than that on the ground.
