SoNo is what many call South Norwalk, Connecticut. While it is not technically Norwalk's downtown (which has struggled since the Norwalk River overflowed its banks in 1955), it is the center of Norwalk's nightlife and restaurant culture. In addition, the South Norwalk Metro North station, a movie theater and the Maritime Aquarium and IMAX are located here. An annual arts celebration is also held in the area. In 1900, South Norwalk was a manufacturing city with a large Hungarian population. Before the river overflowed, it had a large harbor with three lighthouses. It was chartered in 1870, before which it was an unincorporated village called Old Well.
