Service History

North Line

The 35-mile Everett to Seattle line started with a Seahawks Game train on December 21, 2003. Regular service started on the 22nd with one morning train to Seattle and one evening train back. A second roundtrip train was added on June 6, 2005 to help increase ridership. By the end of the year, ridership on the North Line had more than doubled to 700 boardings a day. There are currently two stops along the North Line: Edmonds and Everett. In 2007, Sound Transit will open up the Mukilteo station. The South Line began service with two roundtrip trains on September 18, 2000 with stops in Tacoma, Sumner and Auburn that terminated in Seattle. Eastside Line Proposals

Proposals have been made by several local groups (including All Aboard Washington and Eastside Rail Now!) to extend the Sounder service to Seattle's eastern suburbs by using the Woodinville Subdivision line. This line runs roughly parallel to the I-405 freeway, which may be the most congested freeway in the entire Northwest. It also passes close to downtown Bellevue, which has the second biggest urban core in the state and is still growing rapidly, and is a short shuttle bus ride away from Microsoft's huge headquarters complex in Redmond. The Woodinville Subdivision is a railroad line that is owned by BNSF Railway and takes its names from one of its original end points in Woodinville. ... Microsoft is one of few companies engaging itself in the console wars Where they are up against sony, nintendo, and of course sharps new console which may cause a threat. ... Location of Redmond within King County, and King County within Washington. ...

Some trains from Tacoma would switch to the Woodinville Subdivision using an existing track connection to the east of Renton instead of running on to downtown Seattle. They could continue as far north as Woodinville, or even all the way north to Everett, which is the current end point for the Sounder's northern line. Location of Renton in King County and Washington Coordinates: County King  - Mayor Kathy Keolker Area    - City 44. ... Woodinville is a city located in King County, Washington. ...

In contrast to the existing Sounder routes, which have been extremely costly, the Eastside route could be launched at a relatively low cost. This is in large part because the railroad is only lightly used and has substantial excess capacity. It would still be relatively cheap even with a major upgrading of the track, although the track is currently serviceable for speeds up to 30mph (and thus it could be used almost immediately for a pilot service). In addition, Sound Transit has a number of surplus locomotives and passenger cars that are currently loaned out to other transit systems but which could be used on the line when their current leases expire.

Sound Transit Sounder Commuter Rail: Promises vs. Performance (4027 words)
Sounder commuter railroad service on existing train tracks in western Washington State from Lakewood (south of Tacoma) to Everett is one of the three modes of high capacity public transportation that Sound Transit promised to establish in the central Puget Sound region in the ten-year period 1997-2006.
Because commuter rail is a major regional investment, there must be continued, deliberate and careful consideration given to developing this new north-south HCT corridor.
And if it had told the state legislature the truth, it would have been referred to the applicable statute, and told that Sounder commuter rail was not qualified to proceed, as it was not "a reasonable alternative" with costs equal to or less than a bus, as the law required.
