Smurfit European Open finale produces smiles on many players for many reasons (793 words)
STRAFFAN, Ireland (PA) -- For lots of different reasons, there were lots of happy golfers at the end of the Smurfit European Open at the K Club Sunday night.
Paul McGinley of Ireland and Lee Westwood of England, part of a five-way tie for fourth, were delighted too after re-igniting their bids for a place on Ian Woosnam's side in September.
As well as being considerably richer for his third European Tour victory -- and second in Ireland -- the 39-year-old's rise up the world rankings should also guarantee that he and Bradley Dredge get to defend their title in the WGC-World Cup in Barbados in December.
Smurfit European Open prize fund boosted to €3,264,620 (379 words)
The (Euro)300,000 increase was announced by the European Tour on their official web site on Friday and will help maintain the event as one of the most important on the Tour.
The Palmer Course will stage next year’s Smurfit European Open with the tournament reverting to The Smurfit Course in 2006, the same year that The 36th Ryder Cup Matches are to be played over The Palmer Course.
On the change of names, Dr Michael Smurfit said: "We felt that, as there are many courses the world over which operate under the titles of ’North’ and ’South’, this would give The K Club a more distinctive flavour..
